How to Open an IFC File Without Revit (Free, In Your Browser)

It usually happens on a deadline. A consultant sends you the coordination model, the client asks a question about it, and the file sitting in your inbox ends in .ifc — a format you can't double-click open. You don't have a Revit licence on this machine. Navisworks isn't installed. IT says the software request will take two weeks. Meanwhile, someone is waiting on your answer about a clash, a beam depth, or whether the door schedule in the model matches the drawings.

The good news: you don't need any of that software. An IFC file is an open standard, and today you can open, navigate, and interrogate one entirely in a web browser — for free, without installing anything, and without uploading the model anywhere.

What an IFC file actually is (and why you received one)

IFC — Industry Foundation Classes — is the open, vendor-neutral format for BIM models, standardised as ISO 16739 and maintained by buildingSMART. Think of it as the PDF of the BIM world: a model authored in Revit, ArchiCAD, Tekla, or Civil 3D can be exported to IFC and opened by anyone with a compliant viewer, regardless of which software (or licence budget) they have.

That's precisely why IFC is what gets shared. On most projects following ISO 19650-style information management, the native authoring file stays with the author, and the IFC is the deliverable that moves between parties — architect to engineer, contractor to client, consultant to reviewer. If you're a project manager, quantity surveyor, site engineer, or client representative, you'll receive far more IFC files in your career than native Revit files.

An IFC model is more than 3D geometry. Every element carries data: a wall knows its material and fire rating, a door knows its width and its host wall, a pipe knows its system. Opening the file is only half the job — the real value is reading that data.

Pro tip: IFC comes in schema versions. IFC2x3 is the long-standing workhorse; IFC4 and IFC4.3 (which extends coverage to rail and infrastructure) are increasingly common on newer projects. A good viewer handles all of them, but if a file won't load elsewhere, the schema version is the first thing to check.

Your options for opening an IFC file

There are three broad routes, and they suit different situations.

Desktop viewers. Free tools exist, and paid ones like Navisworks or Solibri add clash detection and rule-based checking. The catch: you need install rights, disk space, and often a Windows machine — exactly what you don't have at the client's office, on site, or on a locked-down laptop.

The authoring tools themselves. Revit and ArchiCAD can open IFC, but importing IFC into an authoring tool is the wrong instrument for a quick review — it's slow, it can re-interpret geometry, and it requires the very licence you're missing.

Browser-based viewers. Modern web technology can parse and render IFC directly in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. No installation, no admin rights, works on any operating system. For the most common tasks — viewing the model, checking element properties, cutting sections, answering "what is this and how big is it?" — a browser viewer does everything you need.

One thing to scrutinise with any web-based tool, though: where does your model go? Many online viewers upload your file to their server to process it. On commercial projects, that can quietly breach your appointment's confidentiality clauses or the project's information security protocol. Before you drag a client's model into any website, check whether processing happens locally in your browser or on someone else's server. If the privacy policy doesn't clearly say "your file never leaves your device", assume it does.

Opening your IFC file: step by step

1. Load the model

Open the viewer and drag your .ifc file into the window (or use the load button). Parsing happens locally; a mid-sized building model typically opens in seconds, larger infrastructure models in under a minute.

### 2. Navigate the 3D view

Orbit with the left mouse button, pan with the right, zoom with the scroll wheel. On a laptop trackpad, two-finger gestures do the same. Double-click an element to focus the camera on it — useful in dense models where you'd otherwise get lost inside a riser shaft.

3. Use the model tree to find things

The spatial tree on the left mirrors the IFC structure: Project → Site → Building → Storey → Elements. Expand a storey to see everything it contains, and toggle visibility per branch — hide the architecture to inspect the structure, or isolate a single level. If you've only ever reviewed drawings, this is the "sheet index" of the model world.

### 4. Read element properties

Click any element and its properties panel opens: name, type, material, dimensions, and the property sets (Psets) the author attached — fire ratings, load-bearing flags, classification codes. This is where most review questions get answered. Is that wall 200 mm or 250 mm? Is the door FD30? Does the pile cap carry the mark number from the schedule? Click and read.

Pro tip: If the properties panel looks sparse, the problem is usually the export, not the viewer. The author may have exported with a minimal Model View Definition (the settings profile that controls what data goes into the IFC) or without custom property sets ticked. Ask them to re-export with property sets enabled — don't assume the data doesn't exist.

5. Cut sections

Activate the section tool and place a cutting plane through the model. Sections are how you actually see a building: slice horizontally for a live floor plan, vertically to check floor-to-floor heights, wall build-ups, or how services pass through structure. Drag the plane through the model and watch the cut update in real time.

### 6. Answer the question you opened the file for

With the tree, properties, and sections, you can handle the most common review scenarios without any BIM licence: verifying an element's size or specification, checking what exists on a level, confirming the model matches the drawings, or capturing a screenshot of an issue to send back to the design team.

That's the whole workflow. No install, no account, and because everything ran locally, the model never left your machine.

What a browser viewer won't do (yet)

Honesty helps you pick the right tool. A browser viewer is built for viewing and interrogation. For automated clash detection between federated models, rule-based model checking, or 4D construction sequencing, you'll still want dedicated coordination software — those are jobs for a BIM coordinator's workstation, not a review on a laptop. But in day-to-day practice, the overwhelming majority of "can you check the model?" requests are exactly the click-and-read tasks above.
